I think the Thunderbolts asterisk is as simple as a type of commercial branding that the team bristles against, nothing more. I believe the theories that, in-universe, they're trying to brand these guys as Avengers stand-ins, something which will go poorly (particularly given The Sentry).
I'll be curious to see how they introduce the team, because as you probably know, in the comics, they were essentially a new superhero group that turned out to be a number of villains rebranding themselves, and this one just uses the name and little else. (And I guess Hawkeye isn't involved with this one as he was in previous incarnations in the comic)
Yeah, it’s pretty unusual that they just went with the least-evil bad guy characters they have. I wonder how they decided on that roster. When they revealed the characters involved I recall being pretty let down.
