The Weekend Warrior Show, Featuring ‘Whistle’ Director Corin Hardy

The Nun director takes on high school horror

I’ve spoken to many filmmakers over the past 22-odd years, and it’s always exciting when I talk to someone new. British filmmakerCorin Hardy came onto the horror scene with The Hallow in 2015, following a number of shorts and music videos. That led to him directing one of the second spin-off movies from The Conjuring franchise, 2018’s The Nun. Having the biggest opening and highest worldwide gross for the franchise (until last year’s The Conjuring: Last Rites), the movie’s success allowed Hardy to choose what he wanted to do next. He became involved with the British series “Gangs of London,” and that kept him pretty busy.

Now, he’s back with his first feature film in seven years, the Independent Film Company and Shudder high school horror flick, Whistle, which will hit theaters on Friday, and it’s likely to unnerve any horror fan who thinks they can handle anything, when it comes to scares and gore. It stars Dafne Keen (Logan) as Chrys Willet, who arrives at her new high school and finds a mysterious object in her locker. Turns out it’s an Aztec Death Whistle, and anyone who blows it… well, they die in rather messy ways, but only after seeing how they were meant to die. Whistle also stars Sophie Nélisse (“Yellowjackets,” “Heated Rivalry”), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon), Percy Hynes White (“Wednesday”), and the one and only Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead).

You can watch my interview with Corin Hardy in the player above, where we talk about how he found the script, casting the young actors, how they pulled off some of the amazing kills (with no spoilers!), and the musical selections, which includes many great needle drops. Enjoy!

Whistle opens nationwide on Friday, February 6.
