With the 4th of July in our rearview mirrors, the summer is officially halfway over, and actually, the summer really only has two more big movies, both superhero movies, with the first of them being released this week from the new DC Universe under James Gunn, which you can read more about below… if you’re a paid subscriber to my Substack. Sorry, that I’m such a stinker, but sometimes that’s just the way things are.
But first, I should mention that this Friday kicks off the 2025 edition of the New York Asian Film Festival up at Film at Lincoln Center, and as always, it’s a huge melange of some of the best recent Asian cinema from Japan, South Korea, China, and other countries, including one movie from Bhutan! The festival used to be more genre-based, but now it’s a mix of genre, comedy, and dramas, and I wish I had more time and money to just explore all of what they’re offering, since I do love Asian cinema. This looks like a really good line-up with zombie movies like Possession Street from Hong Kong, and they’re also doing a tribute to Japanese filmmaker Toshiaki Toyoda, showing his earlier films Blue Spring and Hanging Garden in 35mm, and offering the North American premiere of his new film, Transcending Dimensions. There’s always just so much to check out, and if I had more time to get uptown, I might check out a few things, though I do have screeners of some things.
