I have to say that I first got excited about Evil Dead Burn back in April when I first started hearing about the footage shown at CinemaCon. Mind you, I was never a huge fan of the Sam Raimi franchise, but I loved the Fede Alvarez remake from 2013 way more than the more recent Evil Dead Rise. I was not prepared for how violent and gory things might get in the hands of filmmaker Sébastien Vanicek (Infested), but what he did in this installment really blew me away.
The film revolves around a family mourning the death of their eldest son, his parents (Tandi Wright, Errol Shand) not being a fan of his French wife Alice (Souheila Yacoub), but they all end up in the old dilapidated family home, unaware that it’s been infiltrated by the powers of the Book of the Dead. Over the course of the night, family members will die in horrible ways and then come back to life as “Deadites” in the grand “Evil Dead” tradition.
But Vanicek’s take on “Evil Dead” is something far more nefarious, just going so far in terms of the violence and gore, moving at a pace on par with Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and never letting up. In other words, Evil Dead Burn is possibly the most violent and gory Evil Dead movie yet… and it may even go too far at times, if that’s possible.
